EU Migration Deal: Italy, Netherlands Agree on Asylum Returns

(MENAFN) A new bilateral migration accord is set to redirect thousands of asylum seekers back to Italy, after Dutch and Italian officials put pen to paper on a formal cooperation agreement Wednesday — injecting fresh momentum into Europe's fractured asylum system ahead of a continent-wide policy overhaul.

Dutch Asylum and Migration Minister Bart van den Brink traveled to the Italian capital to sign the memorandum of understanding with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, formalizing a mechanism that will allow the Netherlands to transfer asylum seekers who first set foot on European soil in Italy, a broadcaster reported.

The accord is timed to coincide with a pivotal moment in European Union migration policy. Van den Brink confirmed that Italy has committed to receiving returned asylum seekers from the moment the European Migration Pact comes into force on June 12 — a hard deadline that lends the agreement immediate practical weight. Those who registered with Dutch authorities before that date, however, will be shielded from transfer.

The incoming EU-wide pact offers member states a choice: absorb asylum seekers from overwhelmed frontline nations or contribute resources in lieu of physical relocation. Van den Brink confirmed The Hague has elected the financial route, opting to provide monetary and logistical support to Rome rather than taking in additional migrants directly.

Wednesday's agreement also broadened the scope of bilateral cooperation, with both governments committing to accelerate the deportation of individuals whose asylum claims have been rejected, while jointly targeting the criminal smuggling networks that continue to funnel migrants across Mediterranean and overland routes into Europe.
