Rubio Visits Rome for Vatican, Italian Meetings

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in Rome on Thursday for a series of meetings with Vatican officials and Italian leaders as part of a broader diplomatic trip.

He landed at Ciampino Airport under tight security before heading directly to the Vatican, according to reports from a news agency. He was accompanied by US Ambassador to the Holy See Brian Burch.

At the Vatican, Rubio was received by Monsignor Petar Rajic, prefect of the Papal Household, before being escorted into the Apostolic Palace for a meeting with Pope Leo XIV.

The private audience between Rubio and the pontiff is expected to last roughly 30 minutes. Following this, Rubio is scheduled to meet with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who serves as the Holy See’s top diplomat.

Rubio is also set to travel on Friday to Palazzo Chigi, where he will hold discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

The visit takes place amid wider diplomatic coordination involving the United States, European partners, and the Vatican on global security concerns and ongoing geopolitical developments.
