Italy Praises Pope Leo XIV’s Peace Efforts in Sudan

(MENAFN) Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani has expressed strong support for Pope Leo XIV’s recent push for peace in Sudan, praising the pontiff’s humanitarian message amid growing political controversy involving US President Donald Trump, according to reports.

Tajani said he “greatly appreciated" the Pope’s “intervention for peace” in Sudan, highlighting the Vatican’s role in encouraging dialogue and humanitarian engagement during the ongoing civil war. In a post on X, he also extended good wishes for the Pope’s apostolic journey to Africa and noted that the Pope’s “authoritative words further encourage the Italian government's commitment through humanitarian missions.”

He added that such statements “represent an important contribution to achieving a ceasefire and ending the civil war after three years of fierce fighting,” and called for continued prayers in support of the mission.

The Italian minister’s comments followed renewed controversy after US President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on the pontiff. Trump criticized the Pope on his Truth Social platform, describing him as “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” and accused him of being aligned against US positions on international security issues.

He also claimed the Pope was appointed in part to influence relations with his administration, and questioned his approach to global conflicts, including Iran and Venezuela. Speaking to reporters, Trump reiterated his criticism, saying he did not believe the Pope was “doing a very good job.”

Trump further argued, “I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela,” while also making claims about migration and security policy.

The exchange comes as Pope Leo XIV continues to emphasize ceasefire efforts and humanitarian access in Sudan, where years of conflict have created a severe humanitarian crisis.

His appeals for peace have drawn both international praise and political backlash, highlighting the growing intersection between religious messaging and global geopolitics.
