Italy Moves Closer to Palestinian State Recognition
"Clearly, if the plan is implemented, Italy's recognition of Palestine will certainly be closer," Meloni told journalists during her appearance at the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit held in Egypt, according to a news agency.
Meloni emphasized that Italy remains committed to backing the creation of a Palestinian state while also maintaining its humanitarian efforts for the people living in Gaza.
She highlighted Italy’s willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at stabilizing Gaza, including the potential deployment of Carabinieri troops, should a UN mandate request it.
"Italy is ready to do its part. It's a great opportunity. It's a historic day. I'm proud that Italy is here," she stated.
Describing the ceasefire agreement as "a great success" for US President Donald Trump, Meloni added: "We wish him more (successes), starting with Ukraine."
Just last week, Trump disclosed that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the first stage of a proposal he initially presented on September 29.
The plan includes a truce in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees, and a phased withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip. The first stage was enacted on Friday.
The second part of the initiative envisions the creation of a new administrative structure for Gaza, the deployment of an international peacekeeping force, and the disarmament of Hamas.
