Portugal’s Benfica Shares Skyrocket in First Half of 2025

(MENAFN) Publicly traded shares of top global football clubs surged during the first half of 2025, with Portugal’s Benfica dominating the market by soaring 61.9%.

Trailing Benfica, Borussia Dortmund of Germany gained 25.2%, Celtic from Scotland climbed 16.4%, Manchester United edged up 3%, Juventus rose 2.2%, and Ajax increased 1.5%, much to the satisfaction of investors.

US-based Lenore Sports Partners expanded its stake in Benfica to 5.24% by purchasing an additional 3.28%, reinforcing confidence among shareholders. Benfica’s stock sustained strong momentum from January, hitting record highs in May.

Manchester United responded to cash flow challenges by tightening financial controls and restructuring, resulting in roughly 200 layoffs this year.

Conversely, shares of Italian club Lazio plunged 23.1%, while Portuguese club Porto’s stock fell 4.6% during the same period.

To manage debt obligations, Porto issued new bonds carrying a 5.5% annual interest rate for 2025-28, successfully raising €50 million ($58.6 million) amid solid investor demand. However, since most proceeds went to repay a bond maturing in April, net cash inflow remained constrained, contributing to the share price decline.

Meanwhile, Lazio failed to secure qualification for European competitions in the 2025–26 season after underperforming last year.

Investors are increasingly worried as the club missed its objectives despite contending for the UEFA Champions League, raising concerns about anticipated drops in broadcast and sponsorship revenues.
